What Parents Should Expect at Their Child's First Wrestling Practice

The first practice is always the hardest step. Not for the athlete — for the parent.

Here's what to expect when you bring your child to their first practice at Spartan ELITE.

Before Practice

What to bring:

  • Wrestling shoes (or clean socks if they don't have shoes yet)
  • Clean athletic clothes (no zippers, buttons, or pockets)
  • Water bottle
  • A positive attitude
  • What NOT to worry about:

  • Your child not knowing anything — everyone starts at zero
  • Your child being the smallest/biggest/oldest/youngest — we have athletes of all sizes and ages
  • Your child not liking it immediately — it takes a few practices to settle in
  • During Practice

A typical practice at Spartan ELITE follows this structure:

  • Warm-up — Dynamic stretching and movement drills
  • Technique instruction — Learning and drilling specific moves
  • Partner drilling — Practicing techniques with a partner
  • Live wrestling — Controlled competitive rounds (new athletes are paired appropriately)
  • Cool-down — Stretching and a team huddle
  • The entire practice is supervised by certified coaches. We match athletes by size and experience for partner work and live wrestling.

    After Practice

Your child will be tired. That's normal — wrestling is demanding.

They might also be excited. That's the moment you'll know.

Many parents tell us their child was nervous before the first practice and didn't want to go back. By the third practice, they were counting down the days until the next one.

    The Hardest Step

Walking through the door is the hardest part. Everything after that gets easier.

At Spartan ELITE, your first practice is free. No commitment, no pressure. Just come see what we're about.
